Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance
Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance is North Carolina’s summertime dance experience. Hand picked principle dancers from companies around the country spend their summer months here in Asheville rehearsing and performing innovative contemporary ballet works. Artistic director and resident choreographer, Heather Maloy, creates multimedia experiences that bring together dancers, musicians and visual artists in ways that are entertaining, thought provoking and awe-inspiring. Since its inception in 2003, Terpsicorps has been drawing audiences from as far away as New York, Chicago and Atlanta to experience the amazing talent that comes together in their performances. The shows are always high energy, never dull and are highly theatrical in their approach. The dancers who are chosen to participate are picked for their versatility. Not only must they be classically trained with impeccable ballet technique, but they must also be fearless athletes willing to take risks and push their bodies to outrageous extremes. Because story telling is a key element in the Terpsicorps repertoire, these dancers also must be strong actors and showmen in their own right. This combination of elements is rare to find in a ballet dancer and those who have these gifts are drawn to Maloy’s work. The love that the dancers have for what they are creating is evident in every performance the company gives and part of what makes witnessing it such a memorable and inspiring experience.
