Genre: Music (jazz)

The Western North Carolina Jazz Society presents a season series of world-class jazz concerts at Asheville's Diana Wortham Theatre. Ticket and membership prices are as moderate as possible in order to make great jazz available to as many persons as possible in our community. We give complimentary tickets to all groups of chaperoned students. Our season series emphasizes artistic excellence and creative developing of the roots of jazz planted by Masters such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and Charlie Parker. We have presented luminaries such as Kenny Barron, Ann Hampton Callaway, Wycliffe Gordon, Larry Coryell, Ellis Marsalis, Monty Alexander, and Eric Alexander, as well as rising stars Edmar Castaneda, Taylor Eigsti, Julian Lage, and Rachael Price. We were selected by Mayor Terry Bellamy’s office to receive a City of Asheville Proclamation declaring April, 2008, Jazz Appreciation Month. The Proclamation stated, “…jazz has produced some of America’s leading creative artists and ranks as one of America’s greatest exports to the world. …jazz has become an international language that bridges differences and brings people of all races, ages, and backgrounds together….” We were honored by Mayor Bellamy’s statement as the Proclamation was presented: “The Jazz Society comes very highly recommended.”
